Overview

The Weilberg in Ungstein is one of the finest sites in the Pfalz,
and a worthy recipient of the VDP.Große Lage classification.
Planted in 1982, our vines stand at the heart of the vineyard.

They grow here in clayey loam with plenty of limestone, a
marked difference from the colored sandstone so otherwise
prevalent in the Pfalz. Thanks to a strong additional share of
iron, the soil has come together into a rare configuration called
“terra rossa.” These stone formations are known for their
intense red coloration and excellent supply of mineral
nutrients for the vines. After a hand harvest and brief period of
maceration, the grapes are run slowly through a pneumatic
press.

The must then flows without juice clarification into the
barrel. Spontaneous fermentation extends over several months,
with the young wine remaining on its gross lees until bottling
in late August to promote greater aromatic complexity through
autolysis.
