Pyros Wines

Neil O'Reilly

A few weeks back, I was taking Stenia from our partners in Bodegas Salentein around Dublin and showing off some of their beautiful wines. Though most had tried and loved the Salentein Wines previously, it was their, lesser-known, Pyros range that really stole the show.

With more than 45 vintages under his belt, José Galante has been considered the father of modern winemaking in Argentina. Galante’s influence has reached across generations and transformed Argentine wines into the most appreciated wines worldwide.

With Pyros, José aimed to embark on a distinctive winemaking journey. This project embodies his belief that Argentina, with its vast landscapes and rich diversity, has the potential to produce exceptional wines in both flavor and aroma, even from lesser-known regions like the Pedernal Valley.

The story of Pyros begins in a single plot of vineyards that lies on the Eastern Edge of the Pedernal Valley, over the Southern slope of the Pedernal Hill at 1,400 meters/4,500 ft. high, perfectly located in terms of both soil, climatic conditions and water.

Pyros Vineyard´s unique location over the slope of the Pedernal Hill provides different types of soils that allow them to produce single-plot wines, each one with a unique character and profile.

Thanks to this unique location, Pyros Vineyard enjoys a gentle breeze from the Andes that encourages healthy vine growth, allowing them to produce organic grapes.

Pyros Appellation

Malbec 2021

“A fresh, juicy malbec full of dark cherries, peppercorns, minerals and spices. Lovely fruit with medium body and lots of acidity ripping through the palate. Succulent and nervy in the finish, showing fine-grained tannins. Long and linear. Excellent quality from this vintage.” 92 Points – James Suckling

Pyros Vineyard

Block n°4 2021

“Attractive dark cherry fruit, dusty herbs and white pepper spice. Blackberries, cherries and plums. Wild garrigue and graphite with nice freshness and tension. Youthful tannins, a touch dusty with a racy finish.” 93 Points – Decanter

Pyros Vineyard Limestone Hill 2019

“Exudes aromas that foreshadow what’s to come, with a central chalky-slate presence and fresh violet and mountain herb nuances underneath. Features generous raspberry and plum flavors that are fresh and pure, buoyed by lively, chalky acidity. Ends with finesse and fine tannins. Drink now through 2030.” 93 Points – Wine Spectator
